The Northface 'KNOW Boundaries' campaign is a European-wide online initiative in partnership with REI and top athletes that offers life-saving tips on snow safety via expert interviews, videos, quizzes, and other interactive material.

Strategy

The challenge was to present life-saving snow safety information in a fun, easy way. This was accomplished through the use of interactive videos featuring top athletes and certified mountain guides, quizzes, games, and social media; to introduce key concepts such as avalanche awareness, gear requirements, safety checklists, and other techniques for skiers and snowboarders who venture off the beaten path.

We implemented the site in HTML5, in multiple languages, and incorporated advanced parallax scrolling with hardware accelerated CSS3 and JavaScript, while the firm, atfront AG, created the entire concept directly with NorthFace as well as the design, including state-of-the-art interactive video tutorial lessons.

Result

The website won awards including the Horizon Interactive Awards – 2011 Gold Winner, 2011 Best in Category.

The parallax scrolling was an innovative approach providing a bird's eye view of the slopes which gave users the sense that they were scaling up and down a mountain as they consumed the content.
