Strategy

We developed one of the first Mobile Newspaper, Magazine and Book applications for the iPad and other mobile devices where users could purchase, browse, and consume media such as Esquire, Road & Track, Elle, and the Financial Times for Skiff, the digital arm of the Hearst Corporation. The goal of the initiative was to shape new business efforts in digital journalism during a period of major upheaval in the publishing industry.

We wanted to emphasize that consumers could still have continued access to high-quality journalism as they did with print, but with added engaging elements, high-quality graphics, and visually appealing layouts on a mobile device.

At the same time, behind the scenes, we worked on bridging the gap between the editorial and technical team by developing a unique data delivery and templating engine that would maintain the integrity of the media design, brand identity and differentiation, while incorporating rich, dynamic text, videos, and interactivity.

This system allowed for beautiful, rich design and content akin to their print counterparts that were also dynamically updated, animated, with reflowable text, videos, interactivity and added entertainment.

Result

The Skiff publishing platform was a cutting-edge digital journalism initiative in early 2010. Skiff was acquired shortly thereafter by News Corporation in June 2010, which "made the case that there is value in journalism online for which readers will be willing to pay."
